My Hair

Author: Hannah Lee

Illustrator: Allen Fatimaharan

Publisher: Faber & Faber

This is a gleeful celebration of black hair. The story follows a girl who is excited to celebrate her birthday with a trip to the hairdressers where she was allowed to choose any style she wanted for her birthday party. Sat in the hairdresser, the young girl contemplates which style to get and ponders the styles sported by her friends and family for inspiration. Her mother lets her glorious dreadlocks swing free, whereas her Aunty prefers to shave her hair. Her brothers proudly walk around with their cornrow designs and her big sister is always experimenting with her hair styles! There are too many styles to choose from, how will she ever decide?

The end of the book invites its reader to draw a picture of their own hair. The bouncy illustrations and rhythmic words draw the reader into the rich colours and diversity of this inspiring story. Children are encouraged to experiment with their own hair and discover their own look.
