The Witches

Author: Roald Dahl

Illustrator: Quentin Blake

Publisher: Puffin

This is no fairy-tale. It is a novel about real witches written by the famous British novelist, Roald Dahl. After losing his parents ina tragic car accident, an unnamed seven-year-old English boy goes to live with his Norwegian grandmother. He loves the stories his grandmother would tell, but he especially liked the ones about the witches. She tells the story of how witches look like ordinary people who are secretly out to kill human children. These vile creatures who disguise themselves as ordinary ladies are ruled by the vicious Grand High Witch who in the story has just arrived in England to carry out her most evil plan yet. Follow the story of how one boy and his grandmother seek to defeat the witches and get rid of them for good.

This dark fantasy has attracted some controversy surrounding its depictions of woman as evil, cunning creature. However, when stripped back the novel carries an important message that some people can appear other than they are.
